Sabbath rest
The first reference we found to Economics, or rather the working world was, appropriately, In the beginning, in Genesis 2:2-3. As we embark on our search for meaning – hidden and explicit messages from God about the economy – the first lesson we learn In the beginning, has not so much to do with work but with rest.
God worked for six intense days creating the light and darkness; heavens; land and seas; lights and stars; fowl and sea creatures; animals, man and woman. On the seventh day, he rested and blessed the day.
What about us? Could we too benefit from setting aside one day a week to pause from work and simply rest? (Not so simple for many of us, I know). We spend such effort seeking relaxation, Zen, wellness workshops. All of these Eastern inspired methods are helpful when incorporated into our lives. But in this search for the different aren’t we overlooking something closer to home that’s been with us all along? Let’s posit as such: there is no replacement for resting one day a week. Nothing can as efficiently or simply (or perhaps not so simple for you workaholic Blackberry addicts!) charge our battery as this.
Whether you’re employed or not, the same holds true. You toil daily for endless hours: whether pleasing your boss or looking for work, shuttling your kids to school and activities, cooking, cleaning, working out at the gym. You are taking a toll on yourself, and yes, there is great wisdom to reserving one day a week for nothing else but rest.
But remember resting isn’t just about you; it’s also a “pay it forward” idea. You may decide you want to give resting on the Sabbath at try, but remember those who are working. When you go out to eat, you’re asking people to cook, clean and serve for you. When you watch TV, there’s a crew of technicians and broadcasters working for your benefit. Is there a moral imperative in considering the dignity and rest of others, allowing them too to spend time with their families?
