The Heart of the Bible

Happy holiday to our readers celebrating Simchat Torah, the day Jews finish reading the weekly Torah readings in synongogues, and start again from Genesis.

A related factoid: In Hebrew, the last letter of the Bible is Lamed which appears in the last sentence of the last chapter of Deuteronomy in the last letter of the word Israel. Deuteronomy 34:12: “and for all the mighty deeds and all the terrifying displays of power that Moses performed in the sight of all Israel.”

When they finish reading Deuteronomy on Simchat Torah, they then start again from the beginning, Genesis 1, where the first letter is Bet, in the word “Beresheet,” which is “In the beginning.”

Putting together the Lamed, the last letter of the Torah with Bet, the first letter, we come up with the word, “Lev,” which means Heart. These Five Books of Moses are at the heart of our faith. Yes, we are frequently guided by our heads, but let’s never forget our hearts.
